The Red Cross has launched the new Blood Donor Rewards program! All donors now automatically earn points when they come to give. Donors can redeem points any time of year to receive e-gift cards or save them to redeem and claim an exclusive Red Cross merchandise item in the next calendar year. All blood types are needed, but the situation is especially dire for type O blood as the Red Cross is now limiting distribution of these blood products to hospitals. The type O positive blood supply has fallen below a one-day supply. Blood and platelet donors are needed immediately to ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients whose lives depend on transfusions.
- While thousands of people have stepped up to help since the start of the appeal on 7/13/26, the blood supply isn’t rebuilding fast enough to keep up with hospital demand and the situation has escalated to crisis levels.
- Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this summer’s emergency shortage. Extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses are contributing to lower donor turnout this summer.
- Blood and platelet donors are needed immediately to ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients whose lives depend on transfusions.
- If three more donors came to every blood drive over the next month, we could stabilize the nation’s blood supply.
- A readily available blood and platelet supply is the backbone of modern medicine. Without it, hospitals cannot provide many lifesaving treatments and critical aspects of patient care.
